The task was to be in a group where each member had mastered a different final cut technique, and create a music video for a New Zealand song by The Exponents called "Why does love do this to me".
My group consisted of myself, James and George.
In the first lesson we were introduced to the song and the video and began brainstorming ideas for our video around the lyrics.
In the second lesson, we recapped on the lyrics and as a group looked at other videos that reminded us of the song to inspire us for our video. I thought it reminded me of Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something. This is where we got the idea of staging most of it on the field in an open park environment. We then went out onto the field and filmed some of our sixth form friends playing Frisbee and having a kickabout to enhance the park atmosphere.
In the third lesson we started choosing the effects to use. James had an idea of incorporating colour manipulation similar to the shots in the video Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. We then decided that the colour manipulation would look best in the chorus when all three of us were in the shots together.
We therefore went out and filmed the chorus on the field. This allowed us to have the footage of the chorus that we could use on the second chorus, if we were unable to film any more chorus shots.
In the fourth lesson we looked at the other techniques we could use. I decided on having a 4 screen split for the first chorus with each screen appearing on the guitar strum between sentences in the first verse. When we went outside to film the first verse, Amy's group were outside and said they would be happy to help with acting. This is why Charlie is acting in the first verse split screen. Amy was shooting her video and had her boyfriend acting alongside her in their video. We took advantage of this and decided quickly to have the couple in the second verse "Jackie came...". In our video her boyfriend is looking to join her, but she walks past and pushes him over. However "deep in the valley..." shows the couple together and kissing to make up. We filmed this as an extra that we could include but decided this was too good to leave out.
In the final lesson, this morning. We edited the footage putting in the split screen for the first verse and also editing the colour manipulation on the chorus. George then decided to add a keyframe into the second verse. Once this was finished we saw that we had no green screen, therefore we went to the auditorium to try and film some green screen shots. We were unable to pin up the green screen, so then decided to use the stage lighting as a suitable replacement, borrowed a guitar from the music department and filmed the rest of the video in the auditorium as if rehearsing a performance for a sell out crowd similar to the video for Living on a prayer by Bon Jovi. We incorporated performance conventions into these shots including close ups on the band members and instruments. We then went back to the classroom edited the auditorium footage and added it to our video to finish the song and more importantly the task.
The video is the first youtube video on this page http://tcca2media.blogspot.co.uk. Below is the official music video by The Exponents for Why Does Love Do This To Me.
Enjoy!
